You may not be able to see this at first glance, but this is a firework rocket. Fireworks are fun to light and pretty to look at, but they’re also quite fun to photograph. The way I made this photo: focus to infinity, set the camera to low ISO, moderately high aperture and a long shutter time (a second or two, or possibly to bulb), and track the rocket’s fiery tail as it is launched into the air. Wait for the tail to extinguish, release the shutter (the long shutter time gives leeway in timing the shot) and estimate where the rocket will burst. Voilà, a pretty picture!
